January 13, 2010iNTRAMUROS, the old capital of Manila, was built in 1571. It remains a monumental, if ruined, relic of the Spanish period in Philippine history. It is a city within a city, separated from the rest of Manila by its crumbling walls. This ancient capital had well-planned streets, plazas, the Governor’s Palace and churches. However, many buildings were reduced to shambles in World War II.
- Among the places to visit in Intramuros are the two churches – The Manila Cathedral and St. Augustine Church — and Fort Santiago.
* The Manila Cathedral is the fifth stone church of Manila. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times. From the air, it appears as a giant cross.
* St. Augustine Church is the oldest stone church in the Philippines. It was built in 1599; however, it was also destroyed and rebuilt many times. It is an immense structure of thick walls of Corinthian and Ionic designs.
* Fort Santiago used to be the seat of the colonial powers of both Spain and the U.S. It was also a dreaded prison under the Spanish regime and the scene of countless military police atrocities during the Japanes occupation. Here, too, Dr. Jose Rizal spent his last hours before his execution on Bagumbayan. (now Rizal Park).

Bataan and Corregidor
•March 6, 2008 • 1 Comment
Bataan
In 1942, a combined force of Filipino and American troops made their last stand in Bataan and Corregidor against the Japanese. Many monuments of the Second World War still remain in these two places, which were proclaimed National Shrines.
Corregidor, known as the “Rock” is a tiny, island-fortress guarding the entrance to Manila Bay. It gained worldwide fame in the last war for the gallant stand put up by the besieged US-Philippine forces against the Japanese army.
Bataan, lying just opposite Corregidor, may be reached after a 30-minute boat ride from the “Rock”. It was also a famous battlefield in the last war.

Cathedral of St.Joseph
January 11, 2010Location of the Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker, the main seat of the Catholic faith in Bohol, sprawls on a wide area facing Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, the principal street of Tagbilaran City. Located in the central part of the city, the church has a picturesque setting. In front of it is the City plaza, famed for its flocks of doves and a haven for those who yearn to be alone to meditate, or to rest and relax, or to enjoy a tete-a-tete.
Across the street from the plaza looms the massive, imposing provincial capitol, a stone-built edifice that has been the seat of Bohol’s civil government since Spanish times. At the back of the Cathedral, built on a promontory is a 3-storey rectory, a modern initiative of parish priest Msgr. Cirilo Darunday, sitting astride the old convento which has long been converted into a Palacio de Obispado. Both old and new convents stand on a cliff overlooking Tagbilaran’s scenic bay, where across a shallow sea of about a mile wide, can be seen nestled beneath the hills of the town of Dauis, the beautiful , famed church of Our Lady of the Assumption, whose church bells can be heard across the sea on quiet days.
Heritage Features
The Tagbilaran Cathedral appears imposing outside, and is wide and roomy inside. It has a Neo-Romanesque façade with corbelled arches underneath the cornice. There is a porch before the main entrance. The statue of Saint Joseph, patron saint of Bohol, stands in front where once the atrial cross stood.
Both the interior and exterior of the church of Spanish times have been greatly renovated. Despite frequent renovations to meet modern-day requirements, some historic pieces still remain. The side altars are of the 18th century baroque style. The main or center altar, simply but elegantly decorated with ornate gold designs depicting symbols of Old Testament times, is in the 19th century Neoclassical style.
The image of Saint Joseph the Worker that occupies the center of the main altar is apparently of 18th century vintage .The image of San Roque (St. Roch), the secondary patron placed on the left, is dated 1848, while that of St. Vincent Ferrer on the left is marked 1861. On the main altar’s second storey, immediately above St. Joseph’s throne, is the image of Nuestra Senora de Lourdes ( Our Lady of Lourdes) said to be donated in 1895 by Dona Maria de Bourbon of the Royal House of Spain. This image was installed with great pomp in Tagbilaran in February 19, 1895.
We may recall that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Lourdes, France to the child Bernadette in 1858. The apparition received Episcopal approval in 1862. Pope Leo XIII authorized a mass formulary to the devotion in 1891. Four years later, in 1895, the devotion had spread to and in Bohol. tourist spot
The images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, on the left wing retablo, were acquired in 1897. Of similar vintage are those of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and Our Lady of the Pillar. From these collections of venerated images, one can sense the Jesuits’ love for Jesus and those close to Him, such as His Mother, St. Joseph and the Blessed Trinity.
Confessionals, no longer extant in many churches, are still found and used in this place of worship. Here, they reflect old age and constant use.

Barasoain church
December 16, 2009
Barasoain Church located at the heart of Malolos, the capital of Bulacan.
History:
As we all know, churches are considered historical because of the special events that happened within the place. Barasoain, said to be a replica of the Barasoain Church in Navarra, Spain, was founded by Augustinian Missionaries in 1859. This church served as the session hall of Malolos Congress, the first congress in the Philippines held in September 15, 1898. It symbolizes the church-convent complex that is favored by Spanish Missionaries. This two-structured landmark consists of the church and the adjoining convent.
During the time of feud between the Filipinos and the Spanish troops, Emilio Aguinaldo and his colleagues decided to transfer from Cavite to Malolos to strengthen their defense against the enemies. Barasoain Church served as the home of Aguinaldo and some of the Filipinos for the mean time. Here, they made plans in accordance with their goals in regaining the provinces they gave up to the Spanish troops. They signed up constitutions regarding the fulfillment of their plans. People also used this place as a location for voting. Though, the church was destroyed by fire in 1884. However, renovations were done resulting to the slight conversion of the whole place.
In this church, the Malolos Constitution was drafted in September 29, 1898. After sacrificing the lives of some Filipinos together with their strong conviction and allegiance, they successfully won over the enemies. Eventually, the inauguration of the First Philippine Republic was effectively held in this church in January 23, 1899. This significant place witnessed the powerful alliance of Filipinos towards the country’s freedom from Spanish conquerors.
From then on, Barasoain Church is frequently visited by Filipinos and even foreigners from different sides of the country. And because of its popularity and oldness, many people planned to celebrate wedding, baptism, first communion and other religious activities in this church.Even the former Pres. Joseph Ejercito Estrada vowed his oath of presidency in the altar of the church, causing him to be the only president who took his oath in Malolos, aside from Emilio Aguinaldo.
Beaches in Palawan
The beaches of Palawan topped the list of the best beaches of Asia identified by the prestigious international magazine Condé Nast Traveler in its October 2007 issue.
The New York-based magazine, published by Condé Nast Publications, the same company that owns the New Yorker, Vogue, Glamour, and Bon Appetit, listed Palawan beaches ahead of other spectacular Asian destinations such as Beach No. 7 at Havelock Island in India; Nihiwatu Beach on Sumba Island in Indonesia; Baa on North Ari and North Malé Atolls in the Maldives; and Laem Tong Bay on Koh Phi Phi in Thailand. tourist attraction
According to the magazine’s Great Asian Beach Finder article, “Palawan province’s 1,200 miles of sugary beaches wrapped around 1,780 pristine islands have attracted travelers since Chinese traders crossed now-sunken land bridges from Borneo.”
It said Palawan’s rich ecosystem supports two United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s World Heritage Sites, the coral-rich Tubbataha Reef Marine Park and Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a limestone karst landscape with an underground tributary that emerges into the sea.

“Almost as unique is Miniloc Island Resort, where a private beach leads to crystalline waters rife with damselfish. Sister property Lagen Island Resort’s 51 newer overwater pavilions are overshadowed only by Amanpulo, Amanresorts’ 40 huts scattered along Pamalican Island ’s powdery strand,” the magazine said.
The same article listed diving on Bacuit Bay in El Nido, Palawan, where Miniloc Island Resort and Lagen Island Resort are located, as among the best beach sports that Asia can offer. It cited Bacuit Bay for its prehistoric limestone rocks, gentle currents, and large concentration of fish.
On the other hand, Amanpulo was listed as the best beach hotel and most romantic Asian property, with glass walls that optimize Sulu Sea views framed by lush foliage thick with black-naped orioles and neon-blue Steere’s pittas. Twenty-nine suites encircle the private resort on the 220-acre Pamalican Island , 225 miles south of Manila .
The list was comprised of over 30 beach locations in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, China, and Japan
Except for Palawan beaches and resorts, no other Philippine destinations as a tourist spot made it to the list for such categories as best beaches overall, best beach spas, best beach parties, best beach scenery, best beach hotels, and beach for sports.
